Preparing for Joint Commission Survey
In preparation for the upcoming Joint Commission survey, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center’s Director of Imaging Services, Raleigh White, CRA, RT(R), MA, contacted Nanosonics in June 2018 to ask for help with a process assessment. Specifically, he
wanted a thorough evaluation of Imaging Services to ensure that staff were providing superior high-level disinfection (HLD) for their patients..
Already an established trophon® EPR customer, Raleigh thought it would be beneficial to engage Nanosonics in an additional evaluation and inventory check in the Operating Room, Emergency Department and Infusion Center.
The formal report advised Hutchinson to add and place HLD units throughout the hospital to help imaging technologists, sonographers and other clinical professionals comply with the latest standards and guidelines for reprocessing ultrasound probes while improving safety for patients and staff.
In August 2018, Hutchinson added four new trophon2 systems, bringing their total to five trophon units throughout HRHS. The trophon EPR is located in Interventional Radiology, and the trophon2 systems are set up in the OR, ED and the Infusion Center, as well as one stationed in an ultrasound imaging suite.
Easy Implementation and Training Survey
Once deployed, Raleigh and his staff found the implementation of the new trophon2 units to be extremely easy. “I credit Nanosonics’ training team for this, ”he says. “They trained a core group of individuals here at Hutchinson and we were able to roll out the units to Infusion, OR and ED. Everyone found the new trophon2 systems easy to operate and required very little training because the units are so intuitive.”
According to Raleigh, the implementation of trophon2 throughout Imaging Services, the ER, OR and Infusion Services has reduced the time to clean and disinfect probes by approximately 85 percent, which is substantial when you multiply that savings by the 2,040 probe cleanings performed on an annual basis.
“This frees up a considerable amount of valuable time for our staff and allows for more productive face to face time with our patients. Everyone is benefitting,” he says, adding: “Since adopting trophon2, we are significantly more effective at HLD throughout our facility. Equally as important, our sonographers’ confidence in their ability to eliminate the risks of infection transmission has been raised exponentially.”
An additional benefit is that trophon technology is safe for the environment. “The transducer decontamination process with trophon is quick, simple and safe for the staff, their patients and the environment as a whole because it doesn’t require hazardous chemicals,” he adds.
The Joint Commission survey took place in November 2018. “I knew the surveyor would scrutinize our Ultrasound Department, as HLD is one of the top five areas they evaluated in 2018, but I was confident in the reprocessing procedures we had in place,” Raleigh says.
The surveyor was complimentary of the initiative HRHS took by investing in trophon technology and found the hospital’s HLD processes exemplary. In fact, the resulting surveyor’s report had no findings specific to ultrasound.
During Raleigh’s 25-year career, he’s had several Joint Commission surveyors observe the hospital’s trophon complete reprocessing system and he’s been told repeatedly that trophon is the “gold standard” for maintaining patient and user safety by reducing the risks of cross-contamination between patients and reducing the spread of Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAIs).
Meeting Regulatory Compliance with Ease
The trophon2 AcuTrace™ traceability solution captures information required for the HSRS staff to create audit-ready digital disinfection records. For Raleigh, this along with the automation of the device has had an extremely positive effect on efficiency and documentation to meet regulatory compliance.
Prior to implementing the new systems, Imaging Services was processing 170 probes on a monthly basis. “It was extremely arduous and there were a lot of inefficiencies due to interruptions to workflow and travel time between floors to clean probes appropriately,” he says.
“The previous process required a significant amount of hand-written documentation to keep accurate disinfection records.
However, now with trophon2’s RFID AcuTrac eenabled accessories and consumables, the disinfection cycle information is captured electronically and stored on trophon2. All of this reduces manual error.”
“When writing all of the information down, the documents weren’t as complete as they are now,” he continues. “I believe we are exceptionally efficient at this point in this particular process with trophon2,” says Raleigh. “In addition, we now have traceability back to every probe so we can easily show that probes have been cleaned and are safe for use.”
Looking ahead, Raleigh says he has future plans to upgrade the system to enable integration into their hospital information system and patient electronic medical records.
